As you walk around in real life, your avatar moves along the map using GPS. When a Pokemon is close enough to get, it pops up on your screen. This takes some trial and error, to be sure, and it's not the most refined way Niantic could have let's catch Pokemon, but hey --- it adds some fun and mystery to the catching experience. At least we don't have to risk real world ticks to walk around aimlessly in the tall grass until we strike a Pokemon.
