The monsters were grotesque, Ultraman himself was a hero but awful too, and it was pure good vs. bad. Creatures came from outer space and Ultraman protected mankind from them. I remember one cunning creature that was the size of the small person and was covered with long strands of bizarre hair (difficult to explain). But even that creature, though likable, was pretty ugly. My generation is pretty much figured that monsters should be horrible. Pokemon appears like they lack creature hormones or something.
