In the immediate future, those updates include Niantic focusing on stabilizing the servers and launching the game in other regions, having only officially released in the USA, New Zealand, and Australia.
Many of you've probably missed it in November's onslaught of chart-topping releases, but Nintendo has snuck out a small creature-catching game that's been all the rage in Japan for the last few years. Yo-Kai Watch is a bit like the new Pokemon for Japanese children, complete with its extremely-popular anime series. The truth is, in a few ways, I think it is even cooler than Pokemon.
First, Yo-Kai Watch happens in our world, and your character has ordinary child anxieties. You're not some pre teen who is tossed out into the crazy world to face down dangerous creatures and train them to engage in eccentric gladiatorial combat rites. You are a normal child who needs to fit in with her (or his) friends and worries when her parents fight. Now, I'm not saying that all games should take place in the real world - I love fantasy and sci fi universes! Nonetheless, I'm suggesting that Pokemon games could spend a bit more time coping with stories that we can relate to as folks. The brief episodes that make up the story of Yo-Kai Watch remind me of mini anime episodes, and that's exactly what I've wanted to see the Pokemon games do a bit more of when it comes to storylines.
What one other component of the game Niantic intends to address is the lack of explanation it gives for certain game mechanisms. Addressing especially the rings that form around a Pokemon while catching them, Hanke acknowledges that the game isn't purposefully obtuse.
"It's not something that merely minted and then issued on start day and not transformed."
"I can not say we were that intelligent, no" Hanke said of whether the game was meant to have players work together to learn the app's intricacies. "We got a lot of comments during the beta, we made a lot of progress, we repaired lots of bugs, but I would place it into that group of something we had love to make that more so that it's more apparent."
Now that Pokemon Go has properly established --- in certain lands, at least ---Niantic Labs has no intention of leaving the game in its present state. Instead, the programmer intends to upgrade the game constantly.
In Yo-Kai Watch you play a child who gets the power to see and speak to Yo Kai, vibrant spirits who embody human characteristics and emotions. The battle system is real time and fully different from Pokemon, and the stream of the story is entirely different. Still, there are a couple of things about Yo-Kai Watch's setting and the story that I believe The Pokemon Company could learn from.
The folks in the Yo-Kai Watch world also feel more real than Pokemon game people. Everybody, from small children to old people, in the Pokemon world, is obsessed with talking about Pokemon. Nearly everybody you speak to gives you meta-game advice about Pokemon or Pokemon-related services. They'ren't folks; they're an lengthy tutorial delivery service. The folks in Yo-Kai Watch, on the other hand, have distinct characters and issues that you could pick to help them with. Frequently these difficulties can be solved by summoning or dispelling a Yo-Kai, but they don't know that. They just understand that their employee is inexplicably late for work, they lost an important toy, or they do not know how to ask out the target of their affection. To put it differently, you can see them as real people with interests unrelated to you and your quest. I'd love to see more of that from.
Hanke noted that this doesn't mean the game will always receive major attributes with each upgrade, but Niantic is committed to regularly working on and improving the game. As Hanke has previously said, he reiterates that attributes like trading and upgrades to PokeStops and gyms are among the plans the programmer has in store.
Niantic is also looking into Pokemon Go's GPS and battery utilization problems. It was also recently discovered that Pokemon Go allows Niantic total access to users' full Google accounts when they register with that info.
